Supreme Court Directs States to Withdraw Student Protest Cases, Says Education Should Not Suffer
Apex court asks governments to consider closing FIRs against students linked to NEET protests, emphasising that legal action should not disrupt their academic future
New DElhi, Aug 04 : The Supreme Court has directed state governments to consider withdrawing or closing cases registered against students during protests related to examination issues, stating that young learners should not face hurdles in continuing their education because of such proceedings.
The court’s observation came while hearing petitions concerning cases filed against students who participated in demonstrations over concerns surrounding competitive examinations. The bench highlighted the importance of ensuring that academic careers are not adversely affected due to legal proceedings arising from student movements.
The direction is expected to provide relief to several aspirants who had been worried about the impact of criminal cases on their future studies, admissions, and career opportunities. The court stressed that while violations of law must be examined, students should be given an opportunity to continue their educational journey without unnecessary obstacles.
