US Assures India of Continued AI Access, No Abrupt Restrictions
Talks in Washington focus on trusted technology partnerships, resilient AI supply chains and expanding India's role in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem.
NEW DELHI: The United States has assured India that trusted partners will continue to have reliable access to critical artificial intelligence technologies, easing concerns over potential disruptions in the availability of advanced AI models.
The assurance was conveyed during high-level discussions between Indian and US officials in Washington, where both sides reviewed the future of bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Speaking on the sidelines of the second Pax Silica Summit, Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan said India had sought greater clarity on the US approach to regulating access to cutting edge AI models. He noted that the Indian delegation stressed the importance of ensuring long-term technology availability, particularly as AI becomes increasingly integrated into governance, digital public infrastructure and key economic sectors.
Krishnan said India highlighted that countries investing in AI-driven services require confidence that access to advanced technologies will remain stable and predictable rather than being affected by sudden policy changes.
According to him, US officials explained their evolving policy framework and assured the Indian delegation that access to AI technologies would not become a concern for trusted partner nations in the future. The discussions helped provide greater clarity on the direction of US policy regarding advanced artificial intelligence systems.
The meeting also explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration between India and the United States across the rapidly expanding AI ecosystem. Officials discussed how both countries can leverage their respective strengths in research, innovation, talent development and digital infrastructure to accelerate technological progress.
Krishnan said there was broad agreement that no single country can independently build every component of the artificial intelligence ecosystem. Instead, deeper international cooperation and strategic partnerships will be essential to support innovation, develop responsible AI and ensure wider access to emerging technologies.
Another key area of discussion was the need to establish resilient and diversified technology supply chains. Both sides recognised the importance of reducing excessive dependence on any single geography by creating a more balanced global network for semiconductor manufacturing, AI infrastructure and advanced computing technologies.
The Indian delegation also underlined the country’s growing capabilities in digital innovation, skilled workforce and technology development. Krishnan said there was strong recognition that India is well-positioned to play a significantly larger role in the global technology and AI supply chain as demand for advanced digital solutions continues to expand worldwide.
The discussions reflect the growing strategic importance of India-US cooperation in artificial intelligence, with both countries seeking to deepen collaboration in critical technologies while promoting secure, reliable and sustainable global technology ecosystems.
