J&K govt can’t fight with Centre; ‘Omar Is People’s CM, Not Centre’s Man,’ Says Farooq Abdullah Amid Political Criticism

Jammu, Jan 9th, 2025: National Conference (NC) President Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Thursday emphasized the significance of cooperation between the Central government and the Jammu and Kashmir administration, asserting that working in harmony is essential for the region’s development. Responding to recent comments by NC MP Aga Ruhullah, who suggested that Omar Abdullah risked being perceived as a “Centre’s man,” Farooq Abdullah maintained that Omar Abdullah is unequivocally the people’s Chief Minister, independent of any external influence. “Let him say what he thinks. Omar Abdullah is not working on anyone’s directives. Do you want us to fight with the Centre?” he asked while addressing reporters in Jammu, according to media reports.

Farooq Abdullah underscored the impracticality of a confrontational approach with the Centre, stressing that cooperation is indispensable for addressing the pressing issues faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “We don’t want confrontation with the Centre. If we start fighting, how can we resolve people’s issues? Our aim is not to align with the BJP but to engage constructively with the Central government to ensure the progress of Jammu and Kashmir,” he remarked. He highlighted that the resolution of critical issues such as building schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure requires a functional and collaborative relationship with the Centre.

The veteran leader further elaborated on the National Conference’s stance, emphasizing the distinction between working with the government for the region’s welfare and compromising on political principles. “Our cooperation with the Centre should not be misunderstood as alignment with any particular political ideology. It is about focusing on the people’s needs and ensuring development reaches every corner of the state,” he said. Dr. Abdullah’s remarks underline a pragmatic approach to governance, prioritizing development over political differences.

Addressing another controversy involving a BSF Commandant accused in a paper scam who reportedly sought to join the National Conference, Farooq Abdullah clarified the party’s position. “I was not aware that he is accused in some case. He can’t join the NC until he gets a clean chit,” he stated firmly, underscoring the party’s commitment to maintaining integrity and transparency in its membership policies.
