Bengal CEO Sets Deadline for BLOs to Report on Duty, Warns of Strict Action for Non-Compliance
Booth Level Officers told to collect enrollment letters by Thursday noon, District magistrates asked to ensure full compliance ahead of Special Intensive Revision 2025.
Bengal, Oct 30 : The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has set a strict deadline for all Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to report for electoral duty by 12 noon on Thursday, ahead of the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to officials, BLOs who have not yet collected their enrollment letters despite being appointed have been instructed to do so within the stipulated deadline. The CEO’s office has cautioned that disciplinary action will be taken against those failing to comply.
District Magistrates and District Electoral Officers have been directed to supervise the process and ensure full compliance from BLOs in their respective jurisdictions.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) retains the authority to recommend suspension or initiate legal proceedings against any government employee serving as a BLO or electoral official found guilty of non-compliance.
Earlier this week, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced the commencement of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) for 12 states, including West Bengal, with the first phase beginning on November 4.
BLOs, who form the foundation of the electoral machinery, play a crucial role in the first stage of the three-phase revision exercise. During this phase, BLOs will conduct door to door visits to verify voter details and collect enumeration forms.
Following the initial phase, a draft voters’ list will be released, allowing political parties and citizens to file objections or corrections. In the final stage, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will resolve these complaints before publishing the final voters’ list.
The entire SIR process is expected to conclude by March 2026, marking the first such exercise in West Bengal since 2002.
