Congress recalls Indira Gandhi’s legacy of courage, patriotism and decisive leadership

New Delhi, Nov 19: The Congress on Wednesday paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary, with top leaders remembering her for her fearless leadership, patriotism and contributions to India’s progress. Rahul Gandhi said he continues to draw inspiration from his grandmother’s courage and commitment to the nation.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi offered floral tributes at Indira Gandhi’s memorial, Shakti Sthal, in the national capital.

In a post on X, Kharge hailed her as an “exemplary and dynamic leader” whose political courage and dedication to public service left an enduring legacy.
“Her unwavering resolve and lifelong dedication to public service left an indelible mark on India’s journey of progress. Her ultimate sacrifice in safeguarding the unity and integrity of the nation deserves a million salutations,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi, in his tribute, said Indira Gandhi’s courage, patriotism and moral clarity continue to guide him in standing against injustice.
“I got inspiration to make fearless decisions for India and to put national interests first from my grandmother. Her courage, patriotism, and morality inspire me to stand firmly against injustice,” he said in Hindi on X.

Congress general secretary (organisation) K. C. Venugopal said Indira Gandhi steered India through turbulent times and strengthened the country’s global standing.
“Her bold leadership saw India emerge as a strong global force that stood shoulder to shoulder with superpowers and never bowed to pressure,” he wrote, praising her contributions to national unity and welfare.

The Congress, through its official X handle, described her as the “embodiment of Shakti,” highlighting her role in achieving agricultural self-sufficiency, leading the Green Revolution, and playing a decisive role in the liberation of Bangladesh.

The party added that her commitment to justice, unity and progress continues to guide Congress’ path.
“From securing India’s agricultural independence to challenging global powers, Indira Gandhi shaped a strong, self-reliant nation that bowed to none,” the statement said.

Born on November 19, 1917, Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984.
