Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2: Exploring the Abyss Linking Hawkins and the Upside Down
The show explains the Upside Down as a passage to a more terrifying world, unraveling Vecna’s ultimate plan
India, Dec 28 ; Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 has sparked mixed reactions from fans while some praised its revelations, others found parts of it complex. After ten years, the series finally offers a deeper explanation of the Upside Down, revealing the scientific and supernatural mechanics behind Vecna’s plot to conquer both the Right Side Up and Upside Down.
For years, viewers assumed the Upside Down was a world created by Vecna. Season 5 Volume 2 changes this notion, showing that the Upside Down is not the ultimate destination but a dangerous passage between two worlds. Dustin, the group’s science enthusiast, names this hidden realm the “Abyss,” describing it as a broken tunnel connecting Hawkins to a far more powerful and terrifying dimension.
The Abyss is depicted as a strange, empty world with floating rocks and a yellow sky. It is the origin point of creatures like the Mind Flayer and Demogorgons, and the place where Vecna has remained hidden since being banished by Eleven years ago. The familiar Upside Down version of Hawkins exists within this tunnel not as a copied world, but as a reflection trapped within this interdimensional passage.
The show introduces the concept of wormholes to help explain the Abyss. In theoretical physics, a wormhole is a shortcut connecting two distant points in space and time, first proposed in 1916 and later developed by scientists including Albert Einstein. In Stranger Things, the Abyss functions as this wormhole, linking Hawkins to Vecna’s world.
The tunnel remains open due to a floating energy source called Exotic Matter above Hawkins Lab in the Upside Down. As long as this energy exists, the bridge between the worlds stays active. Destroying it would collapse the tunnel, permanently cutting off Vecna and his monsters.
The wormhole was unintentionally created when Eleven banished Henry Creel, enabling creatures such as Demogorgons, Demodogs, and the Mind Flayer to enter Hawkins over the years. Season 5 Volume 2 finally unravels this mystery, showing that the Abyss is the true origin point of Hawkins’ most terrifying threats.
