“BYD Surpasses Tesla to Become World’s Top EV Seller in 2025”

Chinese automaker BYD delivers 4.6 million vehicles, edging out Tesla, whose deliveries declined for the first time, as competition in the global EV market intensifies.

Beijing: Chinese automaker BYD has overtaken Tesla in global electric vehicle sales for the first time in 2025, securing its position as the world’s largest EV seller, according to a report by the Global Times.

The milestone comes as Tesla reported its first-ever decline in annual deliveries, highlighting the rising competition from Chinese EV manufacturers. Tesla delivered 1.63 million units in 2025, marking an 8.6% year on year decrease, while production fell 6.7% to 1.73 million units.

In contrast, BYD’s annual report revealed that the company delivered 4.6 million vehicles, up 7.7% from 2024, with EV sales rising 28% to 2.25 million units. The company’s growth is attributed to robust R&D investments, advanced manufacturing technologies, integrated supply chains, and supportive domestic policies, experts said.

Industry analysts note that Tesla’s reliance on its Chinese gigafactory underscores the strength of China’s EV industrial ecosystem. With continued expansion of production capacity and supply chains, Chinese EV makers like BYD are expected to maintain their competitive edge in global deliveries.
