Dinesh Karthik: India Tough to Beat, Especially on Home Soil

Former India wicketkeeper hails team’s depth, attacking cricket, and home advantage as defending champions gear up for February tournament.

India, Jan 16 : Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has lauded the defending champions as a formidable side, particularly in home conditions, ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. He highlighted India’s depth, aggressive approach, and ability to adapt as key strengths for the upcoming tournament.

Speaking on Jiostar, Karthik said, “India is a very tough team to beat in most parts of the world, but when it comes to their own backyard, they play some seriously good cricket. Everybody is aware of the depth in Indian cricket, which is fascinating. They could almost field multiple teams and still compete comfortably, given their recent success.”

He added that India’s squad has undergone a transition, with new captain Suryakumar Yadav leading a young, dynamic unit in place of veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. “They’ve played some fabulous, very attacking cricket,” Karthik noted.

Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop also weighed in, emphasizing that defending champions benefit from continuity and preparation. “History has some bearing, but it’s not the be-all and end-all. India has built well between World Cups, which gives them an edge as defending champions,” he said. Bishop cautioned that dew could play a decisive role in matches across India and Sri Lanka, recalling the 2016 Wankhede semi-final as an example.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain reflected on the T20 format’s global appeal. “T20 has become a showcase for white-ball specialists, attracting worldwide attention. The T20 World Cup, especially in India and Sri Lanka, is a stage for pressure performances and upsets,” Hussain explained.

India has been drawn in Group A alongside Pakistan, USA, Netherlands, and Namibia. The Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will begin on February 7, with India opening against the USA at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Key matches include the marquee India-Pakistan clash on February 15 at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, before concluding the group stage against the Netherlands on February 18 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

UP Warriorz’s combination of youth, experience, and tactical consistency positions them as a strong contender in the T20 World Cup, especially when leveraging their home advantage.
