Harmanpreet Kaur’s Rise: Moga to Padma Shri, Changing Women’s Cricket Forever

From small town Moga to World Cup glory, India’s women’s cricket captain inspires a new generation

India, Jan 26 : Indian women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been awarded the Padma Shri in the 2026 Padma Awards, joining eight other sportspersons on the prestigious honours list. The awards this year also include five Padma Vibhushan and 13 Padma Bhushan recipients.

The accolade recognises Harmanpreet’s remarkable career, which has transformed the perception and play of women’s cricket in India. Born on March 8, 1989, in Moga, Punjab, she began training under her father, a former volleyball and basketball player, often practising alongside boys to sharpen her skills.

Harmanpreet made her international debut in 2009, steadily rising in prominence despite limited opportunities, financial backing, and exposure. Her breakthrough came during the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup, where her unbeaten 171 against Australia in the semi-final became a defining moment not just for her career, but for Indian women’s cricket itself. The innings showcased power, confidence, and resilience on a global stage.

As captain, Harmanpreet has driven India’s women’s team through a period of transition, focusing on fitness, aggression, and self-belief. Under her leadership, India achieved historic victories in Tests against England and Australia, reached multiple ICC finals, and finally won their maiden ICC ODI World Cup at home in Navi Mumbai, defeating South Africa by 52 runs.

Beyond trophies and records, Harmanpreet has reshaped mindsets. She has inspired countless young girls to pursue cricket professionally, particularly following the launch of the Women’s Premier League in 2023. Her guidance also led the Mumbai Indians women’s team to two championship titles in the league’s first three seasons.

The Padma Shri acknowledges her influence both on and off the field. From advocating professionalism to navigating growing expectations, Harmanpreet has emerged as a trailblazer for women’s sports in India. Her journey from Moga to international cricket stardom mirrors the evolution of Indian women’s cricket itself resilient, fearless, and ambitious.

In celebrating Harmanpreet Kaur, the awards honour not only her achievements but also her enduring impact on the sport and future generations of female cricketers across India.
