New Delhi, Jan 29: The Union government has taken action against more than 4,000 individuals across the country following complaints related to irregularities in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.

Replying to a supplementary question, Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil said investigation teams were constituted after complaints were received from various regions. The findings of these teams were subsequently shared with the respective state governments for further action.

The minister said the complaints largely pertained to substandard quality of work, financial irregularities and failure to ensure adequate water supply under the flagship drinking water scheme. Based on verified reports, punitive action was initiated against those found responsible.

Patil clarified that funds under the Jal Jeevan Mission are released to state governments, which are responsible for issuing tenders, preparing project reports and ensuring compliance with guidelines laid down by the Centre.
