Liverpool Edge Past Sunderland, Trim Points Gap in Title Race
Van Dijk’s second-half header seals crucial win as Reds stay in hunt for Champions League spot
Sunderland, Feb 12 : Liverpool strengthened their push for a top four finish with a hard fought 1-0 win over Sunderland, secured by Virgil van Dijk’s decisive second-half header. The victory comes as a timely response for Arne Slot’s side following their recent loss to Manchester City, keeping their Champions League ambitions firmly alive.
The contest remained evenly poised through the opening half, with Liverpool creating the more dangerous chances. Florian Wirtz tested goalkeeper Robin Roefs with a curling effort before striking the post, while also seeing a header safely collected as the visitors increased the pressure.
The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute when Mohamed Salah swung in a corner that Van Dijk directed toward goal. Habib Diarra’s attempted clearance failed to keep the ball out, allowing Liverpool to take a slender but vital lead.
Sunderland showed intent on the counter, with Brian Brobbey denied by a crucial intervention from Ibrahima Konate. Trai Hume and Nordi Mukiele also tried their luck after the restart but were unable to find the target.
Liverpool continued to search for a second goal, with Hugo Ekitike heading wide and Salah narrowly missing with a volley. Despite late pressure from the hosts who were again without Granit Xhaka the Reds held firm to secure all three points and end Sunderland’s unbeaten home run this season.
The result leaves Liverpool sixth in the table, now just three points behind fourth placed Manchester United, while Sunderland remain 11th in the standings.
