NSG orders security audit of all Z-plus dignitaries after attack on Farooq Abdullah

Farooq attack triggers nationwide NSG review of high-risk VIP security protocols

  • Attack on Farooq Abdullah puts venue security and VIP protection systems under the scanner

New Delhi, 12-03-2026: The attempted attack on former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah has prompted the National Security Guard to initiate a comprehensive security audit of all dignitaries under its Z-plus protection cover, officials said on Thursday. The move follows the firing incident in Jammu, which has raised serious concerns over venue security, coordination with local authorities and standard operating procedures for the protection of high-risk public figures.

Officials said the NSG, popularly known as the Black Cats, currently provides elite security to nine high-risk VIPs, including Dr Farooq Abdullah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Under existing security protocols, the NSG offers mobile protection while the protectee is in transit and deploys a specialised Close Protection Team of four commandos when the dignitary is inside an indoor venue such as a banquet hall or convention centre.

According to officials, it is standard procedure to undertake a review whenever an extraordinary incident involves an NSG protectee. They said the audit process would now examine the sequence of events, operational response and possible vulnerabilities exposed during the incident. While the NSG is responsible for the immediate protection of the VIP, officials clarified that sanitising the venue, screening entrants and ensuring that no armed individual gains access are responsibilities that rest primarily with local police and other concerned agencies.

Once the exercise is completed, the NSG is expected to communicate its findings to the relevant police authorities and point out any lapses or areas requiring corrective action. The review is likely to focus not only on the individual incident involving Dr Abdullah but also on broader security arrangements for all Z-plus protectees so that comparable risks can be identified and addressed in advance. This has made the audit significant beyond the immediate case, as it may lead to tighter protocols at public functions and indoor gatherings attended by high-risk dignitaries.

Dr Abdullah had a narrow escape on Wednesday night when a gunman allegedly opened fire from behind while he was leaving a wedding function in Jammu. CCTV visuals reportedly showed a police official and an NSG commando intercepting the attacker, after which another commando and additional security personnel pinned him down. Dr Abdullah was then immediately evacuated from the venue in a fast-moving convoy. The quick reaction of the security team is being seen as crucial in preventing a much more serious outcome.
