J&K Faces Dual Challenge as Ground Instability and Weather Disruptions Raise Concerns

Evacuations ordered in Rajouri after land subsidence authorities issue alert over rain triggered landslides across hilly regions

J&k, June 17 : A wave of concern has gripped Jammu and Kashmir after fresh ground instability and adverse weather conditions prompted emergency responses in multiple districts on Wednesday.

In Rajouri district, residents were forced to evacuate several homes after land subsidence caused visible cracks in roads, residential structures, and agricultural land. The sudden geological movement has raised fears of further structural damage in the affected belt, prompting authorities to shift vulnerable families to safer locations. Disaster response teams have been deployed to assess the scale of damage and monitor ongoing ground shifts.

Officials said the incident reflects the increasing vulnerability of hilly terrains in the region, where soil instability continues to pose risks to settlements and infrastructure. Continuous monitoring has been initiated to prevent any escalation of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued an advisory warning of intermittent rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across several parts of the Union Territory. Gusts reaching up to 60 kmph have been predicted in isolated areas, with a heightened risk of flash floods and mudslides in steep and erosion-prone zones.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in mountainous regions, as sudden weather changes may disrupt road connectivity and essential services. Farmers have also been advised to take precautionary measures to protect crops from possible damage due to heavy showers.

With both geological and weather-related risks emerging simultaneously, officials are maintaining high alert status across vulnerable districts and coordinating preparedness measures to minimise impact.
