Student Opens Fire at Thai High School, Several People Injured
Police surround school in Nonthaburi as authorities respond to shooting involving a student; casualties and injuries confirmed.
BANGKOK, Aug. 7: Thai police launched a major operation on Friday after a student allegedly opened fire inside a high school in Nonthaburi province, leaving several people dead or injured, according to government officials.
The incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located northwest of Bangkok. Emergency responders and security personnel rushed to the campus after reports of gunfire prompted an immediate lockdown.
Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan confirmed that officers were deployed to the school and were handling the situation. Authorities said the suspected shooter was a student who remained inside the campus during the initial police response.
Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Arsit Sampantharat told local broadcaster PPTV that the attack resulted in both fatalities and injuries. However, officials have not disclosed the exact number of victims or provided details about their identities.
Police secured the area while emergency teams assisted the injured and evacuated students and staff from the premises. An investigation has been launched to determine the motive behind the shooting and establish how the student obtained the weapon.
The incident has once again drawn attention to school safety in Thailand. Earlier this year, a 17-year-old carried out a shooting at a public high school in southern Thailand after stealing a firearm from a police officer. That attack claimed one life, injured two others and involved a brief hostage situation before the suspect was arrested.
Authorities said further information on Friday’s shooting will be released as the investigation progresses.
