Amul Announces Rs 2 per Litre Price Hike for Fresh Pouch Milk, Cites Rising Operational Costs and Commitment to Dairy Farmers

New Delhi, 02-06-2024:The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets milk and milk products under the brand name Amul, has announced an increase in the price of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre starting from June 3, 2024.

“The increase of Rs 2 per litre translates to a range of 3-4% increase in MRP, which is much lower than average food inflation. It is worthwhile to note that since February 2023, Amul has made no increase in prices of fresh pouch milk in major markets,” the GCMMF said in a statement.

The cooperative explained that this price hike is necessitated by the rising overall costs associated with the operation and production of milk. The statement emphasized that the increase in input costs, such as feed, fodder, and energy, has significantly impacted the cost structure, making the price adjustment unavoidable.

“Our member unions have also increased the prices paid to farmers by approximately 6-8% over the last year,” the statement added. This increment is intended to support dairy farmers, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their produce amidst rising operational costs.

Amul highlighted its policy of passing on nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers. This policy ensures that a substantial portion of consumer expenditure directly benefits the farmers.
