J&K’s Ratle Hydro Electric Project Reaches Landmark as Chenab River Flow Diversion Expedites Construction Phase
New Delhi, 29-01-2024 : On Monday, the Government made a significant announcement regarding the Ratle Hydro Electric Project in Jammu & Kashmir, revealing the diversion of Chenab river water through diversion tunnels at Drabshalla in Kishtwar district. This development, considered a major milestone, took place at 11:30 AM on January 27, 2024, as confirmed by the Ministry of Power.
The purpose of diverting the Chenab river flow through these tunnels is to isolate the dam area, thereby facilitating excavation and construction works. This strategic move is expected to expedite the overall construction activities and play a crucial role in minimizing potential delays. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all efforts align with the scheduled commissioning deadline set for May 2026, as highlighted by the ministry’s official statement.
The Ratle Hydro Electric Project is currently in progress under the direction of the Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (RHPCL). This corporation operates as a joint venture between NHPC Limited and the government of Jammu & Kashmir, with a respective shareholding of 51% and 49%. The Ratle HE project, nestled on the Chenab river in Kishtwar district, boasts an impressive installed capacity of 850 MW.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave its nod to the Ratle Project in January 2021, approving a budget of Rs 5,281.94 crore for its execution. With the recent diversion of Chenab river water, the project aims to overcome logistical challenges and ensure a smooth progression of construction activities, thereby remaining on course to meet the stipulated commissioning deadline. This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to harnessing hydroelectric power in the region and bolstering its energy infrastructure.
