PM’s Farewell to RS Members: ‘Politics Never Ends’, Praises Senior Leaders

PM praises senior leaders, calls Parliament a lifelong learning space during farewell address

New Delhi, Mar 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday bid farewell to 59 retiring members of the Rajya Sabha, describing Parliament as an “open university” and encouraging outgoing legislators to remain active in public life.

Speaking in the Upper House during the customary farewell, Modi said such occasions rise above political differences and foster a shared sense of respect among members. He emphasised that political life does not end with tenure, noting that experience gained in Parliament continues to benefit the nation.

The Prime Minister paid special tribute to veteran leaders including H. D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sharad Pawar, commending their decades-long dedication to parliamentary service. He said their consistent participation set an example for younger lawmakers.

He also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, highlighting his calm demeanour and active engagement with youth on national issues even during recess periods.

In a lighter moment, Modi referred to Union Minister Ramdas Athawale as “evergreen,” expressing confidence that his public engagement would continue beyond the House.

Reflecting on the role of Parliament’s two Houses, the Prime Minister said the legislative process benefits from scrutiny and debate, likening it to a “second opinion” that strengthens decision-making. He added that a term in the Rajya Sabha offers invaluable exposure to national governance and policy matters.
