Srinagar’s Iconic Boulevard Road Faces Damage as Dal Lake Shoreline Gives Way
Cracks in Srinagar's Lakefront: Footpath Near Dal Lake Collapses, MLA Tanvir Sadiq Calls for Urgent Repairs
Srinagar, 20-02-2025: A section of the footpath and sidewall along the iconic Boulevard Road on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar collapsed and was washed away on Thursday, raising concerns about the stability of the lakefront infrastructure. Officials reported that the incident occurred near Ghat No. 17, though no casualties were reported. Despite the damage, traffic movement on the Boulevard Road, which leads to the famed Mughal gardens of Nishat and Shalimar, remained unaffected.
Authorities responded swiftly by installing iron barricades at the affected site to prevent any accidents and ensure public safety. The collapse follows light rainfall in Srinagar and its adjoining areas earlier in the day, which may have contributed to the erosion.
National Conference leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Tanvir Sadiq visited the site to assess the damage firsthand. Expressing serious concern over the structural instability, he urged the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar to take immediate action to prevent further deterioration. Speaking to reporters, Sadiq stressed the urgent need for a sustainable, long-term solution to reinforce the lakefront and protect it from further erosion.
Taking to social media, Sadiq highlighted the severity of the issue in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “A critical issue has emerged near Ghat No. 17, Boulevard Road, Srinagar, where the path and soil have been washed away. Immediate intervention from the DC Srinagar is needed,” he wrote, amplifying the call for swift administrative action.
With the Dal Lake shoreline being a vital part of Srinagar’s tourism and environmental heritage, concerns are growing over the increasing vulnerability of its embankments. Environmental experts have repeatedly warned about the impact of unregulated construction, soil erosion, and climate change on the lake’s ecosystem.
The local administration is expected to initiate restoration efforts soon, though residents and stakeholders are calling for a more comprehensive approach to fortify the area and prevent similar incidents in the future.
