SRINAGAR,21-02-2025: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has issued a stark warning about the worsening effects of climate change on Kashmir’s economy, urging urgent intervention to mitigate the crisis. The business body has called for immediate government action to address the growing environmental challenges that threaten key economic sectors, including agriculture, horticulture, hydropower, and tourism.
With the summer season approaching, concerns are mounting over the alarming depletion of water resources, including drying springs, shrinking lakes, and declining groundwater levels. These environmental shifts, exacerbated by climate change, deforestation, pollution, and mismanagement of wetlands, have heightened fears about water scarcity, which could severely disrupt the region’s agriculture and allied industries. The chamber stressed that erratic weather patterns, declining snowfall, and rapidly melting glaciers pose a long-term threat to livelihoods across the valley.
One of the most immediate consequences of the climate crisis is a reported 80% decline in hydroelectric power generation, which has significantly impacted both industrial and domestic energy supply. The severe power shortages have posed substantial obstacles to manufacturing units and small businesses, further straining Kashmir’s fragile economy. The KCCI warned that without decisive intervention, the worsening energy crisis could stall industrial growth and discourage investments in the region.
The tourism sector, a cornerstone of Kashmir’s economy, has also taken a severe hit. The lack of adequate snowfall has disrupted winter sports activities, leading to the postponement of the much-anticipated Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg. This setback not only damages Kashmir’s reputation as a premier winter sports destination but also negatively affects adventure tourism, a key revenue generator. The decline in tourist arrivals, particularly from international visitors, threatens employment and business sustainability within the hospitality sector.
Raising the alarm over the worsening crisis, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged the severity of the water crisis, noting that the situation has been deteriorating over the past several years. He emphasized the need for long-term planning to address climate-induced challenges and ensure sustainable economic growth.
In response to these escalating concerns, the KCCI announced its plans to engage stakeholders through awareness programs, seminars, and policy discussions aimed at formulating effective climate change mitigation strategies. The chamber emphasized the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect Kashmir’s lakes, rivers, wetlands, and other critical water bodies. It reiterated its commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility, warning that failure to act now could have irreversible consequences.
To combat the crisis, the KCCI has urged the government to establish a high-powered committee led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to oversee climate adaptation policies. The business body has also called for special financial allocations in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir budget to support environmental conservation initiatives and implement emergency measures to safeguard the region’s economy from the adverse effects of climate change.
With Kashmir’s economic stability hanging in the balance, the KCCI’s appeal underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive climate resilience plan to ensure the sustainability of vital industries and the well-being of the region’s population.
