PM Modi Appeals for Vigilance as Heatwave Intensifies Across India
Prime Minister urges citizens to stay hydrated, protect vulnerable people and care for birds and animals during severe heat conditions
NEW DELHI, May 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed to citizens across the country to remain cautious and take all necessary safety measures as intense heatwave conditions continue to affect several parts of India.
In a series of messages posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding unnecessary exposure to extreme temperatures, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
Highlighting the severity of the weather conditions, Modi said the ongoing heat spell is affecting people across regions and urged everyone to exercise maximum caution to prevent heat-related illnesses.
“Different parts of India are witnessing soaring temperatures and the challenges that come with it. This heat is harsh on all of us and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible,” the Prime Minister said.
He advised citizens to carry drinking water while stepping outdoors and encouraged people to help others by offering water during the extreme weather conditions. Modi said simple acts of kindness and timely assistance can make a major difference during heatwaves.
The Prime Minister also warned people not to ignore symptoms of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, nausea, headaches and extreme fatigue, saying such conditions can rapidly worsen and lead to heatstroke if immediate attention is not provided.
“If someone around you feels unwell, weak or develops a headache, it is best to help move them to a cool and shaded place immediately,” he said.
Modi particularly expressed concern for children, senior citizens and outdoor workers, describing them as the most vulnerable groups during severe heat conditions. He urged families to regularly check on elderly relatives and ensure they remain hydrated and avoid direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.
The Prime Minister also called upon citizens to provide relief support such as water and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) to people affected by heat stress.
“In such weather, timely care and attention go a long way,” he said.
Apart from human safety, Modi appealed to people to show compassion towards birds and animals struggling in the scorching temperatures. He encouraged citizens to place bowls of water outside homes, balconies, terraces, shops and offices to help thirsty birds survive the harsh summer conditions.
“A small bowl of water can become a lifeline for a thirsty bird. May compassion guide us in these difficult days,” he added.
According to the India Meteorological Department, several regions in northern and central India are currently experiencing severe heatwave conditions. Banda district in Uttar Pradesh recorded a maximum temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, making it one of the hottest places in the country.
Meteorological officials stated that a heatwave is officially declared in plains when temperatures cross 45 degrees Celsius, while temperatures exceeding 47 degrees are categorised as severe heatwave conditions.
Health experts have advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, wear light cotton clothing, consume adequate fluids and seek immediate medical attention in case of heatstroke symptoms.
Authorities in several states have also issued public advisories, increased emergency medical preparedness and directed local administrations to ensure the availability of drinking water in public areas as temperatures continue to rise across the country.
