21-06-2023 : President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine addressed the Ukraine recovery conference, highlighting the country’s ability to unite the European Union (EU) like never before. Speaking virtually from London, Zelenskyy called for Western countries to provide support for the reconstruction of Ukraine, which has been ravaged by war.
Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of recovery efforts, stating that they would not only benefit Ukraine but also contribute to the economic growth and well-being of all nations involved. He stressed the importance of living freely and highlighted the potential for job creation, corporate profits, and GDP growth as part of the recovery process.
Accusing Russia of committing what he termed as “the largest crime of ecocide in Europe,” Zelenskyy referred to the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam. He expressed pride in Ukraine’s success in uniting the EU like never before, describing it as a true unity of values reflected in political, economic, sanction, and humanitarian decisions.
Zelenskyy also highlighted Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen alliances with countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, and all EU members. He emphasized Ukraine’s potential as a key supplier of green hydrogen and clean electricity, noting that the sector alone holds a potential value of around $400 billion.
Advocating for full membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Zelenskyy positioned Ukraine as an essential component of European defense. He emphasized that building Ukraine would have far-reaching implications, shaping not only the country itself but also the world for generations to come. The President questioned whether this future would be peaceful, stable, and democratic, emphasizing that it depended on the collective efforts of all stakeholders.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who opened the summit, echoed the sentiments expressed by Zelenskyy. He condemned Russia for its destructive actions and called for accountability. Sunak announced UK government loan guarantees worth $3 billion and expressed pride in Ukraine’s resilience and progress in restoring its energy grid.
The two-day summit, hosted jointly with Ukraine in London, aims to mobilize international support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Sunak reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s economy and announced the launch of the UK-Ukraine TechBridge initiative to foster investment and talent. He also revealed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would provide $15 billion to Ukraine over four years as part of a $115 billion commitment by the G7.
The World Bank Group President, Ajay Banga, welcomed the UK government’s guarantees and highlighted the support from leading global businesses. He emphasized the World Bank Group’s dedication to assisting Ukraine in rebuilding lives after the devastation caused by the war.
Sunak concluded by expressing solidarity with Ukraine and pledging ongoing support for its defense and counter-offensive efforts. He acknowledged Ukraine as a vibrant and dynamic European country that refuses to be subdued, emphasizing the collective commitment of allies to stand with Ukraine until victory is achieved.
The Ukraine recovery conference in London provided a platform for President Zelenskyy and world leaders to emphasize the need for international support in reconstructing Ukraine and resolving its ongoing conflict with Russia.
