Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanks PM Modi after receiving iconic Indian toffees during his Rome visit, as both leaders strengthen bilateral ties and cultural friendship.
ROME, May 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi added a light-hearted and memorable moment to his Italy visit by gifting a pack of popular Indian ‘Melody’ toffees to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, turning a viral internet joke into a real diplomatic gesture.
The cheerful exchange quickly caught public attention after Meloni shared the moment on social media platform X, thanking PM Modi for the sweet surprise. The gesture sparked excitement online, especially among social media users familiar with the popular “Melody moment” trend associated with the warm friendship between the two leaders.
The phrase “Melody” has frequently been used online by users to describe the friendly chemistry and public interactions between Modi and Meloni during international summits and meetings. By presenting the iconic Indian candy, PM Modi appeared to acknowledge the viral trend in a humorous and personal way.
The meeting took place shortly after PM Modi arrived in Rome on Tuesday as part of the final leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour. The two leaders first held a dinner meeting where they discussed a range of bilateral and global issues before visiting the historic Colosseum together.
Photographs shared online showed the leaders walking through the iconic Roman monument while engaging in detailed discussions. In a post on X, PM Modi described the interaction as meaningful and productive, saying they exchanged views on several important subjects and would continue discussions aimed at strengthening India-Italy cooperation.
Earlier, Meloni warmly welcomed PM Modi to Rome through a social media post calling him “my friend,” underlining the growing personal rapport between the two leaders. She also shared images from their Colosseum visit, which soon gained widespread attention online.
Apart from the diplomatic engagements, PM Modi’s Rome visit also highlighted cultural ties between India and Italy. During the visit, the Prime Minister met renowned Italian painter Giampaolo Tomassetti, who presented him with an artwork depicting the ancient city of Varanasi, also known as Kashi.
PM Modi praised Tomassetti’s long-standing admiration for Indian civilisation and culture, noting that the artist has spent more than four decades working on themes connected to Vedic traditions and Indian epics. The Prime Minister highlighted the painter’s extensive work related to the Mahabharata, created between 2008 and 2013.
The visit comes at a significant time for India-Italy relations, as both nations continue advancing the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. The framework focuses on expanding cooperation in trade, defence, technology, clean energy, innovation, science, and cultural exchange.
Economic relations between the two countries have also witnessed notable growth. Bilateral trade reportedly reached USD 16.77 billion in 2025, while Italian investments in India have continued to expand steadily over the years.
PM Modi’s visit to Italy is being viewed as an important step in deepening strategic and cultural engagement between the two democracies, while the ‘Melody’ toffee moment added a unique personal touch to high-level diplomacy.
